6. Gravimetric Methods
Formerly very widely used, but now much less so. The species being analysed is converted, by a chemical reaction, to a compound with very low solubility. This is filtered, the precipitate then collected, dried and weighed. The method requires only simple equipment, apart from an accurate balance. It can give accurate and reproducible results. However it can be time-consuming, not least because it is essential the drying process has fully taken place.
